The next day, Charlotte walked along the wooden jetty to the end of the quay. Small gift shops and cafés vied for passing tourists, but Charlotteâs gaze was fixed on the end of the jetty where her date was waiting for her. She gave a low whistle and smoothed down her summer dress. This time, Rachel just might have got it right.
With blond hair trimmed neatly at the nape of the neck where it just touched a starched collar, her date was tall and well dressed. The shirt he wore was tailor made and fitted his body like a glove. As did the dress pants. She could see at a glance that they were expensive, designer clothes from their cut and cloth. They suited the wearer to a T. The man stood gazing out into the distance. She could see the square jaw and the side of his dark glasses. He stood as if he owned the place, like a movie star surveying his personal stretch of water and private yacht which bobbed in front, its pennant snapping in the breeze. Maybe it was his.
Suddenly someone called out and the man half-turned. He was even better looking from the side. He had the face of an⦠Charlotte faltered in her step. An Adonis, she said to herself, as she halted. Who else had she said that about?
Then the man turned further and waved at someone who was cruising past in a motorboat. They exchanged a few manly insults, laughed, and he turned to face her. Yep, it was definitely Cam Connelly.
He took off his sunglasses and, even though she knew it was him, there was a part of her which was still impressed. He looked so⦠so perfect. So different from his usual low-key self. His mouth split into a broad grin.
âCharlotte! You came!â
She shook her head. âI wouldnât have if Iâd known it was you.â
Annoyingly, he laughed. âThatâs why we decided not to tell you.â He forced his features into a serious expression. âHowever, now that you know itâs me, youâre perfectly entitled to turn right around and walk back along the quay and return home. Absolutely. Entitled,â he said with emphasis.
She opened her mouth to speak, but theatrically he raised a hand to stop her. âBefore you say anything, I would just like to point out that I had a haircut especially for you. And that theseââhe plucked at the shirt and pantsââhave been bought for me by my lovely sister, Rachel, to tidy me up a bit. So,â he said, putting his head to one side, âwould you really like to see Rachel waste her money?â
He looked so comical standing there, a slight pout on his lips as he tried to turn her irritation to humor. But she refused to be taken in.
âYouâve both tricked me. Youâre as bad as each other.â She bit her lip to stop herself from laughing and turned away, not wanting him to see the effect he was having on her.
âIâm sorry, Charlie,â he said, obviously imagining her to be more upset than she was.
